This information is from the East Coast News which was published Wednesday evening March 27th 1901. The paper was edited by Dr LAZARUS .B.A and published every Wednesday Vizagapatam registered No M-111 V.111 No 24.
Lieutenant -Colonel .A.H. LEAPINGWELL, I.M–
The news of the retirement of this officer from active service will be learnt with deep regret by one and all in the town and District of Vizagapatam. During ten years or more that Dr LEAPINGWELL,was in our midst he made himself highly popular by a longing desire to tend to the sick not for the sake of filthy Lucre but for the sake of relieving their suffing. He was ever ready to go where duty called him. Although as the district Surgeon of Vizagapatam he has had multifarious duties to perform, such as the Superintendence of the district. Jail, Lunatic Asylum and Military Hospital, besides his duties as District Sanitary and ———. Dr LEAPINGWELL,was highly spoken of by the authorities ——- if he had not been a government officer, the residents would have presented with a farewell address or a valuable souvenir. In the absent of such public demonstration we as representatives are grateful for —— and the patients in particular are grateful for what he has done for them. The civil Dispensary with it,s additions and improvements will ever stand as a monument of ——— disinterested labours for the welfare of the people .His unostentatious manner, his great gentleness, his extraordinary patience, his unflinching faithfulness in the discharge of his duties will be forever imprinted on the hearts of those with whom he came in contact with. His subordinates will always feel drawn towards him for he was ever ready to attribute ——– every praise for the success of——– -labours and never liked that he should be praised for what they had done——- is indeed difficult to find another that should take his place in the hearts of the people ——– as he is to go to his native home .
”To husband out life,s taper at the close . And keep the flame wasting by repose
We can only wish him a hearty farewell ,a pleasant voyage, and a joyful meeting with his dear ones there. And we feel sure he will continue to take every interest in the welfare of India where he has spent the best part of his life.
